Japanese licence plates follow a set format, with each section carrying its own meaning:
- Registered City (e.g. 横浜/Yokohama) - The regional transport office where the vehicle is registered
- Classification Number (e.g. 550) - Indicates the vehicle's category, based on size, engine displacement, and usage
- Usage Type Character (e.g. め) - A hiragana character showing the type of use, such as private passenger car, rental, or business.
- Registration Number (e.g. 20-20) - The individual registration number, unique to that vehicle
